Welcome to the NZ Avalanche Advisory (NZAA) Privacy Policy - it is awesome you have found your way here, not many people do! Seeing as you’ve taken the time to find this page, we’ll make it brief and easy for you. 

NZAA is owned by the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC), and exists to prevent avalanche incidents.  

If you have subscribed to an update from the NZAA or MSC, we will collect some basic personal information from you. 

We will never sell your personal identifiable information. We will only share it with trusted third parties, as outlined in this policy, in order to operate our services. 

We will digitally communicate with you, but only for purposes related to NZAA or MSC's alpine updates (if you select this option), such as the release of new alpine and avalanche resources, tools or information, or to share safety messages and conditions updates with you. You can unsubscribe from our communication at any time. 

You can access the personal information we hold about you at any time. 

You can request that your NZAA subscription and associated data be deleted at any time

Privacy Policy In Detail  

You are not required to provide personal information to us to use this website, unless you wish to subscribe to email updates, which are optional.  

 When you provide personal information to us, we will comply with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.

The personal information you provide to us when subscribing to email updates is collected and may be used for communicating with you, statistical analysis of site use, for research and development and marketing purposes. 

We also collect technical information whenever you use the website. This may include information about the way users arrive at, browse through and interact with our website. We may collect this type of technical information through the use of cookies and other means. Cookies are alphanumeric identifiers that we transfer to your computer’s hard drive to enable our systems to recognise your browser. If you want to disable cookies, you may do so by changing the settings on your browser. However, if you do so, you may not be able to use all the functions on the website. 

We use the technical information we collect to have a better understanding of the way people use our website, to improve the way it works and to personalise it to be more relevant and useful to your particular needs. We may also use this information to assist in making any advertising we display on or about the website more personalised and applicable to your interests. 

Generally, we do not disclose personal information to third parties for them to use for their own purposes. However, some of the circumstances in which we may do this are:

Third-party analytics and advertising 

NZAA has implemented Google Signals alongside Google Analytics 4. When Google Signals is enabled, only data from users who are signed into their Google accounts and have turned on ad personalization can be used for the following additional Google Analytics features: 

  •  Cross-platform targeting: To serve relevant advertising across multiple platforms or devices where you are logged into the same accounts (e.g. Google/Gmail).   • Remarketing with Google Analytics: To create remarketing audience lists and share those audiences with our managed Google Ads account to present advertising relevant to your interests. If you would like to customise or opt out of these settings, please visit: https://adssettings.google.com/
  • Advertising Reporting Features: To collect information from Google advertising cookies when they are present, along with the information that Google Analytics normally collects.
  • Demographics and Interests: To collect information about demographics and interests from Device Advertising IDs and from users who are signed into their Google accounts and who have turned on Ads Personalisation.

We also use tracking technologies, such as pixels,  from other advertising platforms, including Meta and Reddit. These tools help us measure the effectiveness of our advertising campaigns, and present relevant information about Plan My Walk in advertisements when you are using Facebook, Instagram, Reddit etc.

Changes to our privacy policy 

It is our policy to post any changes we make to our privacy policy on this page with a date the policy was last adjusted. We will not reduce your rights under this privacy policy without your consent in accordance with applicable law. If we make material changes to how we treat our users’ personal information, we will notify you by email to the email address that you have provided to us and/or through a notice on the Website. The date the privacy policy was last revised is identified at the top of the page. You are responsible for ensuring we have an up-to-date active and deliverable email address for you, and for periodically visiting our website and this privacy policy to check for any changes. We will keep prior versions of this privacy policy in an archive for your review. 

You have the right to request access to, and correction of, any of the personal information we hold about you. If you wish to delete your subscription, you can request this at any time, and we will remove all the information we hold about you from our systems.
